History

Home Security Store was founded as a $20,000 Californian business in 1995. Originally the company was operated from a garage, eventually moving to 20,000-square-foot (1,900 m2) building as it grew.[1] The company was co-founded by Ralph Winn, who comes from a family involved in the security industry since the 1940s.[2] Winn himself has been involved in the home security field since 1973.[3] Winn previously worked in Honeywell Security's Government Division and served as a security consultant to foreign governments, including Russia and Ukraine. He is also known for founding and operating Norco Alarms, an alarm-installation company.[4]

Overview

The Home Security Store currently has a multi-million dollar annual revenue and dozens of employees.[5] In July 2011 the company joined the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce.[6] It sells all major brands of home security products through its headquarters at 1760 Chicago Ave. in Riverside, California[1] and its web site.[4] Shipping and life-time tech support are free,[7] and the website is based on the AspDotNetStorefront platform.[3]

Products

All products sold by the company can be installed by the consumer,[8] including advanced GPS Trackers, wireless home alarm systems, home automation technology, home security systems, home security decoys, surveillance equipment, personal emergency response systems, and biometric safes and door locks.[8]

Brands include GE Security, Visonic, Winland Electronics, Lorex, Optex, Sensaphone, SVAT, Dakota Alert, Rokonet, Cyre, Ademco, DSC, Linear Security, SkyLink, USP, Honeywell, ELK, Chamberlain, and Altronix.[1] Owner Ralph Winn has his own line of security products sold at the company under the brand name WINN Security Products of North America.[2]

In July 2011 the company announced they were releasing the Visonic Powermax Wireless Alarm System, which they co-developed in cooperation with Visonic.[9][10] The security kit is intended to be user friendly and easy to install, and can be monitored via personal appliances such as mobile phones or a professional alarm monitoring company.[11]

Events

In early 2011 the company successfully defended their website from a DDoS attack of unknown origin.[12]

In June 2011, it was reported that Police executive Peter Chun helped in the arrest of a family of five long-term burglars after he filmed them on the robbery on his CCTV surveillance network. The policeman publicly credited the Home Security Store's "Build Your Surveillance System in 6 Easy Steps" website feature and help division for the system.[7]
